2001-03-29 15:15:25 - Fuck Napster

I am seriously pissed. Today the inevitable happened. I went searching Napster for the Deftones "Passenger" ala Maynard James Keenan and came up empty on the search. There were a few lingering Deftones songs but they were rarities and b-sides. Not what I was looking for. So I figured I would try my luck at other services popping up. I'm very familiar with Gnutella and the inherent flaws in it's system so I thought I would try another call iMesh. It's been touted as the most downloading client sharing program, second only to Napster. I gave it a whirl and let me tell you, it's not the second coming of Jesus.

Let's face it. What Napster was will never be again. Granted, we may be able to subscribe to a Napster like service in the not too distant future. But never again will audio trading exist like it did last year. And I'm pissed.

I think our only hope is Gnutella. I've played around with Gnutella and, more specifically, it's protocol. Gnutella is an interesting idea. Create a network of clients which talk to each other in a spiderweb fashion without a central server. Sounds like a winning idea, right? Remove the big brother layer of Napster. Plus Gnutella uses http headers for passing it's information. If ISPs were to block http headers then no one would be able to surf the web. So everything has been thought through with Gnutella right?

Log a bunch of high bandwidth users on and all is good on the Gnutella network. Throw in some modem users and the shit hits the fan. Imagine our computers are connected to the Internet through DSL. My computer asks your computer if it has the Deftones "Passenger" mp3. With a phat connection the request is pretty unnoticable. I would get a near immediate response. Now what if you were on a modem? What if the pipe between you and me wasn't as phat? Well, we still wouldn't see much of a lag. Now imagine if 10 people are asking you, on your little modem, if it has the Deftones "Passenger."

2001-03-27 06:27:34 - Sage-like advice

Cars. I absolutely hate cars. I feel I can have this hatred towards cars because I rarely drive anymore. I mean, I seriously wish I had no use for a car ever again. I'm so ready for a very, very simple life. I've seen this as a trend with other people I talk to. Maybe it's because I hang out with a bunch of hippies. Nonetheless a lot of their carefree attitude is starting to rub off on me. I think I could give up most of my life. The only things I think I would cling to would be my music and *possibly* my computer. But the more I think about how much I hate my computers at home the more I could live without them.

2001-03-14 21:15:54 - Did you say Depressing? OH! You mean Pathetic

Why do I torture myself. Here are some simple instructions on figuring out your net worth. Me? At a quick glance I am worth $100. I am not kidding. The short and skinny is to take all the major things you own (cars, houses, you know, the cool shit) plus all your cash on hand(liquid assests) and subtract your debt(car loans, mortgages, credit card debt, any other loans) and you have a rough estimate of your net worth. Right now my car is worth $3,000 less than what I owe on it. My liquid assests are nill. So I'm figuring my microwave + 500 CDs has got to be close to $3,000. So yeah, I'm worth 100 bucks.

    2001-03-14 16:04:03 - I'm a drag

Wow, Salon.com is on a tear with great articles. Here's a new one discussing why the radio sucks. It basically outlines that radio stations receive money for playing certain songs. So the music on the radio is not determined by listener popularity but by the money received for said services. It doesn't bother me much. I stopped listening to the radio years ago. Although if I still had cable I would still watch MTV. I dunno what it is about that station. I just love everything on it.

I'm trying to arrange for the first pauxpas install with Aron's help. I don't think it can be done if a user doesn't have 100% control over the host box. But Aron is willing to try so we'll give it a run. I'm hoping to release more of my code in the very near future.
